Earth hour, and Melville

Last week, N and I celebrated Earth Hour by reading Herman Melville’s Moby Dick aloud by candle light. I had saved some hand-sewing, but felt like I was pushing my luck cutting button holes open in the dark! (I finished my project later that evening and will post pictures soon).

Moby Dick, for those of you who haven’t read it yet, is about a grudge between a whaling boat captain and the white whale who maimed him. The book also covers whaling in general, and I learned that one of the main uses for whale blubber was for lighting lamps. How strange that we used a similar light form in order to economize on energy!

It was a really pleasant way to spend part of the evening, and we’re already planning on doing it again.
